I hold an MBA and a Doctor of Metaphysics. For most of my career, only one of those was on my business card.
I was not a disciplined child. I was a free one — loud, curious, hard to contain, and largely uninterested in being told where the edges were. Discipline didn't come from the work. It came from Mãe and Pai, who held a line I spent years testing and never once moved. That's the inheritance: they gave me the structure, and I brought the fire, and I've needed both of those things more than I could have known at the time.
I made mistakes. A lot of them, and not small ones. I learned most of what I know the hard way, which is the only way I've ever seemed to learn anything.
Then I got serious, and I got very good.
I spent two decades running the business side of American healthcare. Patient access. Revenue cycle. Operations. Transformation. I led departments of up to 200 people, moved collections dramatically in organizations that had written those dollars off, redesigned workflows that hadn't been questioned in a decade, migrated systems, and rebuilt broken client relationships that other people had given up on. More recently I've been contracting in AI — bringing twenty years of operational judgment to the technology that's about to reshape all of it. I sat across from CFOs and boards and told them the truth about their numbers. I was good at it. I am still good at it.
And the entire time, I was practicing.
Not casually. Not as a hobby I mentioned after two drinks. I studied. I eventually earned a doctorate in metaphysics while running hospital operations, because both of those things were real and I refused to pretend otherwise. I just did it quietly, the way a lot of us do — one identity for the conference room, one for everything else, and a private exhaustion from keeping them apart.
Then, in the middle of all of it, I was drugged, held hostage, and raped by a neighbor.
My daughter is the reason I came home. She knew it wasn't like me to simply disappear. My car was in the driveway. She had never trusted the man next door. So she scaled his gate, broke through his door while he was gone, and got me out. I couldn't walk. I was dead weight in her arms, and I made it across the back alley to my own house with nothing on. She was not supposed to have to do that. She did it anyway.
That is where my spiritual awakening began, and my life has not resembled the one before it since.
I'm not going to tell you it made sense of itself, or that I found the gift in it. What I will tell you is what became true afterward: I stopped performing. I stopped keeping the two halves of myself in separate rooms. I stopped needing anyone's permission to be exactly what I am, in a boardroom or anywhere else. There is a particular kind of freedom that arrives on the other side of surviving something, and it does not care at all what people think.
The untamable kid came back. She just knows things now.
Here is what I understand that I didn't before, and it's what this entire organization is built on:
The work of transformation is the same at every scale.
A hospital system stuck in dysfunction and a person stuck in their own patterns are running the same failure. Both know something is wrong. Both have built elaborate workarounds instead of fixing it. Both are protecting an old structure that used to keep them safe and now only keeps them small. And both change the same way — by telling the truth about where they actually are, and then doing the unglamorous work of moving.
I don't split myself anymore. I bring operational rigor to spiritual work and spiritual honesty to boardrooms, and the people who need both tend to find me.
